it was terrible. >> bitten by a beaver, an 83-year-old woman tells her story of a painful attack. and a threat leads to a plane being grounded and a passenger pulled off a flight. now a police say the man is actually the victim of a birthday hoax. good achb, i'm pat lawson muse. we start off with breaks new. a jury has just found former police officer drew peterson guilty in the murder of his third wife kathleen savio. the required was just read moments ago. peterson was charged in her death three years after it happened. >> after the high-profile disappearance of his fourth wife. savio was found dead in 2004. peterson had denied wrongdoing in the cases of both wives. he'll be sentenced november 26th and facing a maximum of 60 years behind bars. >> we'll have much more tonight at 5:00 and 6:00. now to that elaborate hoax played out at philadelphia

international airport today. a threat led to a flight being grounded and a startled passenger being pulled right off the play. >> as nbc's jay gray reports, the suspected terrorist was actually an innocent man who had no idea what was going on. >> reporter: the warning came just after 7:00 this morning. >> it was alleged that a made, and a name was given, would attempt to get onto an airplane en route somewhere this texas with a dangerous or hazardous substance. >> that name was christopher shell, a passengers from phipp to dallas. he posted this picture online just before takeoff. 30 minutes into the trip, the plane was ordered it turn around. at it landed, the jet was moved to a locate where armed officers, shell was taken off the plane in handcuffs. >> we checked him and his carry-on luggage and determined he was not in the possession of

anything dangerous, hazardous our illegal. >> reporter: as fbi agents questioned shell, it became clear he was not part of any criminal plot, but instead the victim of perhaps a prank on his 29th birthday. >> that this was a hoax, and a pretty nasty trick was played on a passenger, and it resulted in really a threat to all of the passengers. >> reporter: an investigation into who made the call and why continues. >> it's just incredibly foolish and irresponsible thing to do. the bottom line it's criminal. >> reporter: and costly. u.s. air estimates the hoax will coast upwards of tens of thousands, a price tag that does not include the fears and frustrations of dozens of passengers hurried off the plane and onto later flights. jay gray, nbc news, dallas. police in los angeles searched the home of a bank manager today after she was forced to help rob her own bank.

investigators say two men kidnapped the woman from her home yesterday, strapped what they said was a bomb to her body, and forced her to get money from the bank. a bomb squad blew up the device. it turned out it was not a bomb. police say today's search was part of their standard procedure and at this point the manager is not a suspect. to politics now, the president gets to set to make his case for a second term after bill clinton presented a lengthy argument last night. president obama will delivered his speech to a much smaller live audience than originally planned, the weather forcing the speech inside. steve handelsman is covering the convention for us. >> reporter:. president obama has been formally renominated. he's gotten a rousing endorsement from the most loved democrat. >> if you want a future of shared prosperitity where the

the day certainly isn't ending the way it started. >> how many of you were surprised to see all the rain? >> we were a bit surprised s. >> last night i started looking

at it and thought maybe we'll see more rain than we thought, but it wasn't a little more rain, it was a lot more rain. even up to 3 inches of rain overnight into early this morning. i thought we would easily get into the low 90s today. so far only around 84 degrees, waiting for the official number. currently sitting at 87, but here's the number right now. we're looking at partly to mostly cloudy skies, i think we'll continue to see them the rest of the evening before we start to clear out. winds out of the southeast, our dew point at 70, so still on the very warm side. temperatures right now 86, 90 in frederick. more cloud cover to the east, and we've tayed? the 70s. and now here as the rain over the last 12 hours. look how much rain came through. a lot of yellows, oranges and

reds, and some parts, a severe thunderstorm down towards fredericksburg, numerous trees down here, and we saw some flash flooding. now this is all pushing down to the south and east. we're not quite done just yet. one up towards fred ricks county, and this one just to the east of gaithersburg. it has produced a bit in the way of rain. moves down to the south, could be close to rockville in about the next 15 to 20 minutes, so heads up. they are going to be dying out the rest of the night, though, i don't anticipate too much more, be able to wouldn't be surprised to see a few showers tomorrow either. very warm across our area. that front helped to trigger more storms today. this, tess a chance to a shower. we are going to the on the warm side tomorrow.

welcome back at 4:30 on a busy day in the news. >> an update on our breaking news this hour. drew peterson has just been led out of the courtroom in handcuffs. a jury found him guilty in the murder of his third wife, kathleen savio. he body was found in 2004. peterson is a former police officer. he became a household name after

>> reporter: they're shapes, bright colors. >> reporter: with the shiny packaging and candy coloring, an alarming number of children are eating them, confusing them with sweet treats. this spring, jessica sutton's then 20-month-old daughter isabella found a laundry pod on the floor and tried to eat it. >> vomiting, she had dirhea, she was -- it was pretty much the symptoms of a stomach virus. >> reporter: thankfully she recovered quickly, but she's part of a growing number of children getting sick this way. >> i've never seen a consumer product that had that degree of injury in a small child. >> reporter: the pods, made by several different companies, came out just this year. all right there have been almost 3,000 cases reported of accidental ingestion, mostly in children 5 and under, approximately 13 cases per day reported to poison control centers nation weill. almost half vomited, other effects include drowsyness and

respiratory problems, sometimes requiring hospitalization and a ventilator. >> it's very, very concentrated. when little kids bite into this concentrated detergent, it reacts in their bodies in a different way than regular detergent. >> reporter: in a statement, the american cleaning institute said detergent manufacturers are reemphasizing the important of keeping single unit dose laundry detergent packets out of the reach of children. we are obviously very concerned whenever these situations occur. >> in fact many manufacturers are saying they are redesigning the packets so it's tougher to get into. keep them on a high shelf or just don't buy the pods until the kids grow up a bit. a colorado girl is recovering from a rare case of a bubonic plague, only the second case in the u.s. this year. she came down with the disease last week. doctors say when she arrived at

the hospital in denver, she was having seizures and a temperature of 107. they believed she got the illness during a camping trip with her family when she was probably bitten by infected fleas. she's expected to go home in about a week. doctors say she's lucky to be alive. the plague killed 25 million europeans during the middle ages. today a fairfax county woman is expected to get out of the hospital after she was attacked by a rabid 50-pound beaver in a lake. she talked to news4's jim rosen field about the frightening ordeal and why she will never swim there again. >> terrible. >> reporter: bandaged and traumatized lillian peterson being treated for multiple bite wounds. her ordeal began tuesday evening. during one of hers usual swims, something she's been doing for half a century without a problem until now. >> i was getting out of the water, and this beaver came after me from nowhere. >> reporter: this 50-pound

beaver, now confirmed to be rabid by fairfax animal control. >> the first thing he did is take a big chunk out of my leg. i tried to fight him out. >> there was someone nearby, who saw what was happening, got to shore and struck the beaver with a branch, and struck it until it was sort of in a daze. >> reporter: it was a fisherman friend of peterson who came to her aid. she credits him with saving her life. >> i would have been dead, no two ways about it. >> that beaver has been euthanized by animal control. peterson is now being treated for rabies. creepy, ominous, annoying, that's how residents in west seattle describe an odd humming sound that's swirling around their neighborhood. they say it even keeps them up at night. one resident, that is, recorded the sound. take a listen. 6. folks say this relentless

hum can be heard for miles. large industrial plants nearby say it's not them. the city is investigating, but so far no smoking gun. residents just want it to stop. >> it gets higher and lower, it kind of goes away and comes back. >> it's very odd. >> it does have an unworldly sound to it. >> it's kind of creepy. it creeps you out physically a bit, but we want to know. tell us what it is. >> reporter: and they heard the same noise back in 2009. it did eventually go away. maybe that will happen this time, too. kind of wants to make you move to a new spot. >> yeah. much more ahead, it's a story you've got to see. police save an 86-year-old man who's trapped in a burning car. we'll show you hose a bystander helped rescue one of those officers. and a little girl survives an incredible descend. an incredible descend. a bus landed on

maybe rockville pike. this is right over portion of the mountains, and right over -- if you're driving up 13, you may run into fairly heavy downpours. this storm is not moving a lot as it drifts to the south. up to the north, and this is what we'll be watching during the day tomorrow. instability, mainly back towards the west tomorrow in through the mountains. most of us should stay on the dry side. 62 in leesburg, so getting cooler. 70 degrees in the d.c. area. i think we'll see areas of fog overnight. that could be a problem in through tomorrow morning, as you head to work, as the kids head off to school. tomorrow afternoon we get nice and warm. that's really about it. 87 on saturday, late-day thunderstorms for the metro

this 9 week-old kitten named pump country didn't want to be homeless anymore showing up after her doorstep. >> she was on my porch, and i trying to get her and she ran off. >> reporter: stacy didn't think anything of it, not know when the kitten came from. she went to bed and went to a wedding the following morning. >> she estimates it was about midnig midnight, so decided to stop here. she pulled up through the drive-thru. >> reporter: instantly realized it was coming from her car. >> i called my friend and we found her stuck up under the bumper area. >> reporter: she was lodged in so tight, they had to unscrew pieces -- >> her face was down through the ground and one paw was out.

>> reporter: she sunday burn us on her ears, her front right leg is so severely damaged, a vet has recommended amputation. otherwise she's in good health, and expected to recover. >> we got her out and she's been mine since. >> reporter: which could have been her plan all along. >> that pump country is one tough cookie, and a lucky little cookie, too. another incredible story of survival. how a little girl became trapped underneath a bus and walked away just fine. and this video is enough to make your heart stop, but don't worry, you will line the ending. a family of ducks navigating its way across a very busy highway. coming up on "news4 at 5," robbed and attacked inside a church over the weekend. hurricanes isaac left a lot of destruction and some homeless puppies.
